The Pension Protection Fund’s (PPF) main function is to provide compensation to members of eligible defined benefit pension schemes, when there is a qualifying insolvency event in relation to the employer, and where there are insufficient assets in the pension scheme to cover the Pension Protection Fund level of compensation.

The PPF’s investment team manages over £30 billion in assets on behalf of nearly 300,000 members. We’ve received multiple industry awards, including recognition at the IPE European Pension Fund Awards, and are widely respected for our innovative approach and high standards across investment and operations. As a responsible investor, we integrate material Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) considerations into our Investment Strategy and our ESG team is fully embedded within our Investment team. Recent recognition that we have received for our ESG progress being named as a “Leader” on the Responsible Asset Allocators Initiative (RAAI) assessment of global asset owners.

We’re looking for a Sustainable Investment - Stewardship Manager to work with the Head of ESG & Sustainability, other members of the ESG team, and the broader Investment team.

The role is accountable for the implementation, ongoing development and effective delivery of the PPF’s Stewardship Strategy, supporting the management of investment risks through engagement and voting and contributing to the achievement of sustainable long-term investment return across the Fund.

A core focus of the role will be the appointment, oversight and assessment of external managers across all asset classes (public, private and real assets), ensuring stewardship, ESG integration and engagement expectations are clearly articulated, monitored and enforced. In parallel, the post‑holder will lead the continued development of the PPF’s ESG integration and stewardship approach for internally-managed assets, working closely with the Investment team to embed these considerations into investment decision‑making. The post-holder will also provide ESG due diligence on potential co-investments and direct deals.

We expect suitable applicants to have a successful background managing Stewardship issues in an investment context as well as leading and delivering projects from an ESG perspective. We expect the post-holder to be well-versed with industry best practice standards in ESG across asset classes (public, private and real assets). A clear record of cultivating external fund‑manager relationships and holding them to account when necessary is required, along with the ability to drive the evolution of the PPF’s stewardship activities by leading corporate‑engagement and proxy‑voting activities.
